Getting Involved

Embedded Course Projects

Several courses in business and the liberal arts embed service-learning projects in their curricula through which students can collaborate with community partners to addresses issues related to the common good. Students may work one-on-one with people of different ages, races, and cultural backgrounds in settings throughout Waltham and Greater Boston. In business courses, students engage in a variety projects that serve different facets of an organization, for example, analyzing accounting information systems, developing strategic plans, designing websites, and conducting marketing research. In liberal arts courses, students engage in America Reads, elder care, English as a second language, and other similar programs.

Fourth-credit option projects

Many Bentley courses offer a fourth-credit service-learning option for which students register early in the semester. To receive the fourth credit, students conduct a community service project and produce either a written or oral report. Earning three fourth-credits enables students to fulfill a three-credit arts and sciences or unrestricted elective (or a requirement in the student’s minor or major field, if approved by the appropriate department). Cluster courses are also available.

Service-learning internships

Courses throughout the curriculum offer internships, which foster intensive, consultative relationships between student and community organization. Internships add significantly to students’ personal and professional growth as well as their appreciation of civic involvement. Students eligible for federal work-study may qualify for paid service-learning internships.

Community Work Program

In addition to service-learning credit programs, many students at Bentley provide non-academic community service through the Community Work Program (CWP). Service-Learning Center Community Work Programs are coordinated by student project managers and carried out by approximately 80 students every semester. CWP students often work side-by-side with academic service-learning students. Any Bentley student who demonstrates an interest in community issues and a willingness to work in the community is eligible for semester-long community service assignments.

Service-Learning Certificate

Students are able to earn the Service-Learning Certificate. To obtain the certificate, students must complete 120 hours of service to the community while attending Bentley.
